Music from the heart

18-year-old violinist Shannon Ma was trained in the San Francisco Conservatory of Music's Pre-College division under Ms. Zhao Wei. She now plays in the Princeton University Orchestra and the Opus Chamber Music Collective. 
 

Shannon was one of 22 violinists chosen globally for the 2021 Menuhin International Violin Competition, and one of 6 finalists in the 2021 Ysaÿe International Competition in Belgium. She was featured on the NPR podcast “Making Menuhin” in 2020 and interviewed on NBC Bay Area in 2021 for her achievements on the violin. In the summer of 2021, she was invited to the Heifetz International Music Institute, and the following year, became a National YoungArts Winner in classical music. Shannon was a violinist in the National Youth Orchestra (NYO-USA) in both 2022 and 2023, touring Europe and North America as cultural ambassadors of music. In 2023, she was honored as Santa Clara County's Student Excellence in the Arts recipient, issued by the National League of American Pen Women.

Supporting My Community 

Shannon performed in the "Food for the Soul" Benefit Concert organized by the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, raising funds for the Silicon Valley's Second Harvest Food Bank. 

Shannon was a guest artist in the "Tribute to Fallen Heroes" Charity Concert, which raised money for the families of fallen California firefighters.

Shannon was also a guest artist in the "Coming Together Against COVID-19" Concert

Shannon serves as a Director of Global Operations for the Back to Bach Project. She organizes visits to elementary schools and creates educational videos to inspire kids to pursue arts.

Shannon is a tutor for the Do Re Mi Project, an international non-profit that provides lessons for young musicians across the world. 

Shannon was an active member of Saratoga High School's Tri-M Music Honor Society and performed in numerous benefit concerts for her community.

Pianist: Dmitry Cogan Shannon Ma started playing violin when she was three years old and is a Pre-College student at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music under Mrs. Zhao Wei. Shannon is a multiple-time first prize winner of the Pacific Musical Society Competition and the US International Music Competition, and she was concertmaster of the 2019 California Junior High All-State Honors Orchestra. She has performed solos with the Palo Alto Philharmonic and performed in masterclasses with Ning Feng, Chen Xi, Sergiu Schwartz, and Danny Koo. When not playing violin, Shannon loves to dance, write and create movies. Founded by Yehudi Menuhin in 1983, the Menuhin Competition is the world's leading international competition for young violinists. The Competition attracts hundreds of entries from countries across the globe, choosing only 44 of the world’s very best young violinists to participate. Held every two years in a different world city the Competition discovers, encourages and nurtures exceptionally talented young musicians from all corners of the world under the age of 22 years to develop into the next generation of great artists.
